Paris is disorder from a array of heartless militant attacks, though these selected photographs are a sign of a city’s fast suggestion and how it has emerged resplendent from dim times in a past.

The images were all taken in 1923 and uncover how Paris sprung to life after World War I, when it was inebriated and suffered food shortages. In the Roaring Twenties a city became a design of music, conform and party fuelled by an unstoppable energy.

After a hardship of World War 1, France longed for light-heartedness. Pre-war values were deserted giving birth to a charming epoch of a flapper, art deco, a initial wordless movies and a conform of Coco Chanel.

The twenties were a time that belonged to artists and writers, a many important city residents being Hemingway, Ezra Pound, Picasso and James Joyce –  so outrageous was a change of these personalities that many of a busy cafés still live off a bequest today.

And attention was undergoing change – cars began to share a Parisian streets with a horse-pulled carts transporting both products and guests.

Photographer Jules Gervais-Courtellemont set out to constraint a charming city experiencing this singular duration of both expansion and confidence post-war.
